Surf Wear
The evolution of surf wear closely mirrors the development of surfing itself in the modern world. Surfing isn’t a new sport, it has been practiced for centuries. However, it is fairly new to the world outside of the pacific islands, and it was very nearly wiped out by Christianity. You see, for centuries surfing was a quasi-religious event that had high importance to the pacific islanders.
When Christian missionaries were sent to the islands, they worked very earnestly to bring their religion. In order to do this, they attempted to do away with any of the islander culture that they found blasphemous or idolatrous. They Christianized names, they outlawed many rituals. One of these outlawed rituals was surfing. Thankfully, they didn’t succeed in eradicating it.
In the early 20th century, surfing began a resurgence, starting in Hawaii and southern California. This is where surfing became something different from its roots, transitioning from a religious ordinance into a branding lifestyle that could come out with clothing and accessory lines. Surf wear is now a major sales force in the apparel market.
