Surf Clothing

Surf clothing was pioneered by surfing companies that were looking to diversify. The impetus came largely from two areas, Australia and Southern California. Quicksilver, a major manufacturer of surf clothing, is based out of Australia. Rip Curl, another, is based out of Southern California.

Surf clothing is meant to be stylish in a relaxed way; exhibiting both comfort and durability. It is an extension of the surfer attitude into the rest of life. The surfer look is popular among those under 30 as a casual look that fits who they are. It originated in surfing hotspots and has spread from there.

Like the sport itself, surf clothing didn’t just show up at the beach one day, fully formed. It slowly evolved over decades. Surfing spawned sports such as skateboarding and snowboarding, so it can claim ownership of a large portion of the youth apparel market. It is a market that will only continue to grow in the years ahead.
